Keep your kids engaged this Christmas season with cursive handwriting practice with the poem “A Visit from Saint Nicholas” (a.k.a. ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas) by Clement C. Moore.

Keeping Handwriting Practice Fun and Meaningful
One of my biggest struggles when my kids were young was trying to keep them interested in learning handwriting skills. They quickly became bored when faced with yet another page of repetitive letters and simple words.
Finally, my oldest clued me into what was wrong when she asked to practice writing the names of her favorite cartoon and book characters. These names were far more meaningful to her which made it fun to practice printing. Since then, I’ve used meaningful words and sentences for their handwriting practice. This has been a much easier approach! This season, both of my kids are working on themed Christmas cursive handwriting practice using the poem “A Visit from Saint Nicholas” by Clement C. Moore.
Christmas Cursive Handwriting Practice
I created these fun cursive practice pages with a bit of a twist! Instead of simply copying the poem, they will also be illustrating the story better known as ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas. This poem provokes such vivid imagery, so I thought it’d be perfect to use that to create a Christmas keepsake. Each page is split in half. The top half has a decorative border to frame your child’s drawing. The bottom half is where they will rewrite the poem. Each stanza is broken into two pages which gives plenty of room to complete the lines. The handwriting lines are elementary sized (1/2″ wide) with the dotted middle line.
The poem is presented in 3 different forms in this printable…
- the full poem without handwriting lines
- the full poem with a solid cursive font to guide letter formation
- the full poem with a tracing cursive font for extra help with letter formation
also…
- 11 blank handwriting pages with festive holiday borders
Once your child has completed the pages, they can be glued on construction paper or card stock for a colorful border and then assembled into a booklet.
