When we think about the Civil Rights Movement, we often think about Martin Luther King, Jr. At least for me, he’s one of the first to come to mind when introducing my kids to this time period. His “I Have a Dream” speech is certainly one of the more famous moments and there are so many wonderful children’s books that highlight his work. Each January we spend some time reading about him. The 3rd Monday of January is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. It’s a great reminder to touch on this topic with our kids each year – especially if we’re not going to tackle this time period in our history studies during the year. This year I created a Martin Luther King, Jr. printable that my kids will be using in addition to books and videos. We’ll be exploring the Civil Rights Movement and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s work with writing prompts and discussion starters. These deep dive conversations are one of my favorite parts of using a literature-rich homeschool approach. It really does decrease (and even eliminate!) the need for traditional tests. Just listening to my kids talk about a topic gives me a clear view about how they understand the material we’re covering. Open-ended questions prompt them to explore out loud what they’re learning. Now that they’re older, we use the same types of questions as writing prompts.
