When my oldest first started learning how to write letters, she quickly became bored with the repetition of individual letters and meaningless words. She wanted to write lists of princess names, toy characters, her friends’ and family’s names, and favorite toys. Those were more meaningful to her than repeatedly writing the days of the week and months of the year. One of the ways I make handwriting practice interesting for her and his sister is by using nature poems for kids. We already do a lot of nature study activities, so incorporating nature poetry into our language arts studies makes perfect sense. However, I’ve learned that these nature poems are wonderful for so much more than just handwriting practice!

Nature Poems in Our Homeschool
There are so many wonderful children’s poems centered around nature. Not only are many wonderful for handwriting practice, but they’re also perfect for memorization work. Many homeschool families include memory work as a part of their morning basket routine. Children’s poems about nature can also serve as inspiration for art projects. The imagery the poets paint with words can be translated into paintings and drawing by our kids. These poems can also serve as a starting point for ideas for other nature study projects.
Each poem can be used as handwriting practice, memory work, inspiration for art and other nature study activities. One poem a month can be a wonderful source of many activities and ideas that will keep kids engaged with the poem all month long!
Nature Poetry Handwriting Printable
I created a printable with 10 nature poems for children from poets such as Christina Rossetti, Emily Dickinson, Sara Coleridge, Robert Frost, and Robert Louis Stevenson. Each poem is shown in print and cursive in full and also broken down into smaller chunks with elementary lines (with the dotted middle line). You’ll also find coordinating blank lined paper for each poem with elementary lines and wide ruled lines. I’ve also included blank handwriting paper that can be used for other projects. Over 125 pages!
These nature poems for kids have 5-12 lines each which is perfect for younger children. For kids just starting with handwriting practice, they can copy one or two lines a day until they finish the poem. Encourage them to go slow and strive for excellent letter formation and posture. It’s perfectly fine for them to take a few days to copy a poem. Let them stop when they tire and pick up where they left off the next day.
